In late Heian (10c-12c), straight chokuto evolved into the curved tachi optimized for mounted combat: the curvature suited the drawing cut from horseback. Sanjo Munechika, Awataguchi Hisakuni, and Hoki Yasutsuna defined the period — Munechika produced Mikazuki-Munechika, one of the Tenka-Goken. The hada is itame, the hamon a fine ko-midare with delicate nie. Beyond utility, swords gained roles as shrine offerings and court treasures.

Kamakura (1185-1333) is the golden age. The Mongol invasions and warrior-government patronage entrenched the Five Schools (Gokaden). Masamune of Soshu, Bizen Osafune's Nagamitsu and Kagemitsu, and Awataguchi Yoshimitsu defined the period. Bright steel, lively nie hamon, and powerful sugata mark the Kamakura tachi. The remaining four Tenka-Goken — Onimaru-Kunitsuna, Ootenta-Mitsuyo, Juzumaru-Tsunetsugu — were also forged here.

The Nanbokucho era (14c) saw the rise of the odachi, often exceeding three shaku (~90cm). Group warfare demanded longer reach against mounted opponents. Bizen Osafune's Kanemitsu and Tomomitsu, and Soshu's Sadamune and Hiromitsu represent this period. Bolder than Kamakura grace, the odachi has thick, powerful build. Many were later cut down (suriage) to katana, so few retain their original length today.

Muromachi (1392-1573) shifted to the uchigatana — shorter curvature, edge-up, drawn in one motion. As the Sengoku wars dragged on, Bizen Osafune mass-produced kazu-mono. Sue-Bizen and Sue-Seki schools flooded the market. The Soshu line dwindled, yet Muramasa, Magoroku-Kanemoto of Mino-Seki, and Miyoshi Chokei-period blades stand out.

Momoyama (1573-1603) is brief but pivotal. The daisho — long uchigatana paired with wakizashi — was codified. Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu collected swords as power symbols. Horikawa Kunihiro and the first Echizen Yasutsugu opened the Shinto period (Keicho 6 / 1601). Koshirae metalwork and lacquer matured, making the sword a complete art object.

Edo (1603-1868), a long peace, shifted swords from weapons to status objects and art. Shinto-period smiths Nagasone Kotetsu, Inoue Shinkai, and Tsuda Sukehiro competed in steel clarity and showy hamon. Shinshinto smiths Suishinshi Masahide, Minamoto Kiyomaro, and Taikei Naotane revived Kamakura forms. Tsuba and fittings by Goto, Yokoya, and Nara-Sansaku elevated the koshirae into pure fine art.

Bakumatsu (1853-1868) brought loyalist blades back to the battlefield. Smiths from the Kiyomaro line, Kurihara Nobuhide, Koyama Munetsugu, and Koyama Munehei armed Sakamoto Ryoma (Mutsu-no-Kami Yoshiyuki), Hijikata Toshizo (Izumi-no-Kami Kanesada), and Kondo Isami (attributed Nagasone Kotetsu). At Boshin (1868) the sword still saw action — but modernization and firearms shrank its role rapidly.

The Meiji Haitorei (1876) dissolved the samurai class; many smiths converted to farm-tool or knife forging. Yet Miyamoto Kanenori, Gassan Sadakazu, and others preserved the tradition. The 1933 Yasukuni "Nihonto Tanrenkai" trained a new generation. Postwar, Living National Treasures — Miyairi Yukihira, Sumitani Masamine, and Gassan Sadakazu II — rebuilt the art. In 1971 the NBTHK appraisal system (Juyo / Tokubetsu-Hozon / Hozon) established the modern preservation framework.
