Wada Yoshimori

Wada Yoshimori (1147-1213) was a samurai commander of Sagami Province and a member of the Miura clan. He served Minamoto no Yoritomo from the start of his uprising, and at the founding of the Kamakura shogunate he was appointed the first bettō (chief) of the Samurai-dokoro. The Samurai-dokoro was an important shogunate institution responsible for overseeing and managing the gokenin, and Yoshimori, as its head, contributed greatly to forming order among the warrior class. He took part in Yoritomo's major military campaigns, including the campaign against the Taira and the Ōshū Campaign, and supported the shogunate's military strength. In 1213, he was defeated in a power struggle with Hōjō Yoshitoki (the Wada Battle) and killed in action, which decisively secured the Hōjō clan's control of the shogunate. He was a senior figure who supported the dawn of warrior rule.
