Taira no Tadamori

Taira no Tadamori (1096-1153) was a military commander of the Heian period and the father of Taira no Kiyomori, who would later come to dominate Japan. Although born into a family of warriors, Tadamori was an outstanding figure who combined not only martial prowess but also political acumen and economic skill. He also engaged in the Japan–Song trade and amassed a vast fortune. This economic power became the foundation for the later height of Taira clan power.

Tadamori also served as commissioner for suppressing pirates along the San'yōdō and Nankaidō, and was a capable military commander who led the warrior bands of western Japan. During the period of Retired Emperor Toba's cloistered rule, he rose to prominence as a trusted attendant of Retired Emperor Toba, and in Tenshō 2 (1132) he was granted permission to enter the inner palace (naishōden), an extraordinary privilege for a warrior. This was a groundbreaking event in which warriors gained recognition in courtly society, opening the way for the fusion of warrior and courtly cultures.

As for a story related to swords, The Tale of the Heike records an anecdote (Tenjō Yamiuchi, “the night ambush in the palace”) in which Tadamori, once admitted to the palace as a courtier, thwarted an ambush by court nobles who resented him by using a wooden sword covered with silver leaf to intimidate them. This demonstrates his calm, composed judgment and his pride as a warrior.
