Shirai Tōru

Shirai Tōru (1783-1843) was a swordsman active in the late Edo period. He was the second head of the Tenshin Ittō-ryū and is known as the founder of the Tenshinden Heihō (Tenshin Shirai-ryū). During his years as a disciple of the Nakanishi-ha Ittō-ryū, he was hailed, alongside Terada Muneari and Takayanagi Matashirō, as the “three crows” (the three top students) of the Nakanishi dōjō. He was also a swordsman who idealized swordsmanship based on mind-centered principles (shinpō).

Shirai Tōru is said to have been born into the Ōno family, townsmen of Edo. From a young age he had a strong interest in swordsmanship. He studied the Nakanishi-ha Ittō-ryū and later trained under his senior fellow disciple Terada Muneari. In Bunka 12 (1815), he succeeded Terada's Tenshin Ittō-ryū and became its second head; he later founded the Tenshinden Heihō himself. His swordsmanship placed great weight on mind-centered principles (shinpō), but it did not fit the prevailing swordsmanship thought of the time, when shinai practice was at its height, and the school is said to have declined.

Shirai's swordsmanship thought drew on the introspection method (naikan) and tanden breathing practice (rentan) described by Hakuin in Yasen Kanna and other works. His writings include Heihō Michishirube, Meidōron, and Tenshinroku.

Regarding the Japanese sword, the Ittō-ryū Gokui records that in Tenpō 3 (1832), Ōishi Susumu challenged dōjō in Edo to an outside-school match using a long shinai of 5 shaku 3 sun. Shirai met him with a short shinai of 2 shaku or less in blade length, used with one hand, and defeated him.
