Head of the Sagara Clan Rooted in the Land of Kuma

Sagara Yoshihi, born in Tenbun 13 (1544), was the head of the Sagara clan, which held its base in Kuma District, Higo Province (present-day Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture). The Sagara clan was a prestigious warrior family that had continued since the Kamakura period. Yoshihi preserved the family name and maintained the domain amid the hardship of being caught between two great powers, the Shimazu and the Ōtomo. Yoshihi's life vividly reflects the harsh political realities faced by regional daimyo in the late Sengoku period.

Surviving Between the Shimazu and the Ōtomo

Caught between the Shimazu clan, which aimed to unify Kyushu, and the Ōtomo clan of Bungo, Sagara Yoshihi sought to ensure the survival of the Sagara clan through skillful diplomacy and submission. In Tenshō 9 (1581), Yoshihi submitted to vassalage under pressure from the Shimazu. In that same year, he was compelled by Shimazu orders to join the campaign against the Aso clan (Kai Sōun). In the battle at Hibikigahara (Hibikinohara, present-day Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture), Yoshihi was defeated by Kai Sōun and died. He died aged 38 (by East Asian reckoning). His tragic end, falling while upholding righteousness among powerful states, was long recounted among the warriors of Kyushu.

The Sagara Clan and Sword Culture

The Kuma region, home base of the Sagara clan, nurtured its own distinctive culture centered on the Hitoyoshi Basin. At the battle of Hibikinohara, Yoshihi rejected his retainers' advice to flee and is said to have been cut down while seated on a camp stool, without drawing his sword.
