Natsuka Masaie

Natsuka Masaie (1562-1600) was one of the five magistrates (go-bugyō) of the Toyotomi administration, responsible for finance and logistics. Trusted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he became lord of Minakuchi Castle in Omi Province. A practical, bureaucratic warrior renowned for his arithmetical skill, he managed supplies of food, weapons, and silver single-handedly. At the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he served as a core figure in the Western Army alongside Ishida Mitsunari and Otani Yoshitsugu; after Shimazu Yoshihiro's withdrawal he found himself isolated and took his own life after the battle. He is said to have favored practical Bizen Osafune uchigatana, a preference that reflected his administrative rationalism. As the unsung economic backbone of the Toyotomi regime, his influence extended to the culture of sword patronage as well.
