Twelfth Headmaster of Jikishin Kage-ryū
Danno Gennoshin (personal name Yoshitaka, sword name Shinpansai) was a swordsman who succeeded to the twelfth generation headship of Jikishin Kage-ryū, a school descended from Shinkage-ryū. In the mid-Edo period, this school's Naganuma Shirōzaemon Kunitomo devised protective armor and the bamboo shinai, shifting practice away from pure form training toward direct sparring — a development regarded as one of the origins of modern kendo.
Training Otani Seiichirō
In 1817, Otani Seiichirō (Nobutomo) entered Danno Gennoshin's school and is said to have achieved full mastery certification in just four years. Otani would go on to become a swordsmanship instructor at the shogunate's Kōbusho military academy, developing into a swordsman so accomplished that he was called "the Sage of the Sword of the Bakumatsu era."
Connection to Katsu Kaishū
Katsu Kaishū, a cousin by marriage of Otani Seiichirō, also studied Jikishin Kage-ryū. Katsu's father, Kokichi, is likewise said to have studied the same school, meaning the teachings passed down through Danno Gennoshin's lineage extended to the Katsu family as well.
Later Reputation
Little documentary evidence survives concerning Danno Gennoshin's own individual deeds, but as the teacher who trained Otani Seiichirō — one of the foremost swordsmen of the Bakumatsu era — he occupies an important place in the history of Jikishin Kage-ryū swordsmanship.
