Blade of the 47 Ronin is a live-action sequel to the 2013 Hollywood film 47 Ronin (starring Keanu Reeves), released as a Netflix Original film on October 25, 2022. It was directed by Ron Yuan, written by John Swetnam and Aimee Garcia among others, and produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment and Scrappy Heart Productions.
Plot
Set 300 years after the original film in present-day Budapest, the story follows the return of the witch Yurei, descendant of the sorceress Mizuki slain by the original 47 Ronin, who seeks to wipe out the samurai's remaining bloodline. A thief named Luna discovers she is descended from the witch clan, while a swordswoman named Onami learns she is the true heir of the 47 loyal retainers. Together they must confront Yurei and his army of ninja over the legendary Tengu Sword.
The Tengu Sword
The film's central plot device, the Tengu Sword, originates from the magical blade a tengu bestowed on the protagonist of the original 47 Ronin, and it is written to respond only to the true bloodline of the 47 Ronin. Rather than retelling the historical Ako Incident (the 1703 vendetta of the 47 Ronin) itself, the film boldly reimagines its aftermath as a present-day supernatural action story, transplanting the bushido ideal of devoting one's blade to one's lord into a fantastical magic-battle framework.
Reception and Legacy
The cast includes Japanese- and Asian-American actors such as Anna Akana and Mark Dacascos, and the film blends martial arts, fantasy, horror, and cyberpunk elements. Positive streaming reception reportedly led to plans for a third installment, extending the franchise's fictional continuation of the 47 Ronin legend.
