Otsuki Gen

Otsuki Gen (1733-) was the only known female swordsmith in Japanese history, active in Bitchu Province (present-day western Okayama Prefecture) during the mid-Edo period. Known by the nickname "O-Gen."

Early Life and Training

Born into the Ebara Kunishige school of swordsmiths, Otsuki Gen lost her father at age 16 and was raised by her uncle Banshiro. To preserve the family line and due to her husband Jinbei Kunishige XII falling ill, Gen was trained in sword-making secrets to continue the craft.

Craftsmanship and Style

Otsuki Gen primarily created short swords (tantō), as the physical demands of forging longer blades proved difficult. Her surviving works demonstrate excellent blade patterns and forging technique. She earned the title "Onna Kunishige" (Woman Kunishige), continuing the Ebara tradition.

Historical Significance

Gen represents a unique figure in Japanese sword-making history, sustaining her family during an era when female craftspeople were exceedingly rare. Her work exemplifies the preservation of Bitchu sword-making traditions.

Extant Works

Several tantō bearing the "Onna Kunishige" signature survive today, respected by sword enthusiasts as masterpieces of Ebara school craftsmanship.
