初代兼定
Description
First Kanesada (c. 1455-) was a swordsmith active in Seki, Mino Province (present-day Gifu Prefecture) during the late Muromachi period and is considered the founding figure of the Mino transmission. Known as "Oya Kanesada" (Parent Kanesada).
School and Career
Kanesada played a crucial role in establishing the Mino transmission. Descended from the Naoé Shizu lineage, he studied under Kanenaga and settled in Seki during the late Muromachi era. A surviving tachi dated Kyōtoku 4 (1455) with the signature "Noshu Sekiju Kanesada" provides documented evidence of his work.
Craftsmanship and Style
First Kanesada's work blended the refined blade patterns of the Naoé Shizu tradition with the robust strength characteristic of Mino craftsmanship. His blades were classified as "ryōgyōmono" (good cutting swords) and highly valued by the warrior class.
The Kanesada Lineage
The Kanesada family he founded continued for eleven generations, becoming the most prestigious smith family of Mino. His second-generation successor achieved "Saijō Ōwazamono" (highest grade) status and earned the nickname "Senryō Kanesada" (Thousand-ryō Kanesada) in the Edo period.
Historical Significance
Kanesada's innovations and techniques established the Mino transmission as one of the Five Transmissions and made Seki a center of sword-making excellence.
