解說
Overview
"Taiheiki" is the 29th NHK Taiga Drama, broadcast from January 6 to December 8, 1991. Based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel "Shihon Taiheiki," it starred Hiroyuki Sanada as protagonist Ashikaga Takauji, depicting the turbulent transition from the fall of the Kamakura shogunate through the Nanboku-cho period across 49 episodes. It recorded an average rating of 26.0% and a peak of 34.6% (Kanto region, Video Research).
Story and the Role of the Sword
The drama follows Ashikaga Takauji, a Kamakura shogunate vassal who rises up in response to Emperor Go-Daigo's anti-shogunate movement, and traces his life through the collapse of the Kenmu Restoration and the Nanboku-cho conflict to his founding of the Muromachi shogunate. Sword-wielding battle scenes involving warlords on both the imperial and shogunate sides, including Kusunoki Masashige (played by Tetsuya Takeda), punctuate the narrative, which is structured around historical events such as the fall of the Kamakura shogunate (1333) and the Battle of Minatogawa.
Swords Featured (Fictional vs. Real)
The tachi "Koryu Kagemitsu" (a National Treasure held at the Tokyo National Museum), said to have been Kusunoki Masashige's favored sword, is a real blade forged in 1322 by the swordsmith Kagemitsu of the Osafune school in Bizen Province. However, its provenance before the Muromachi period is undocumented, and no definitive historical record confirms it was actually Masashige's blade; the association is considered largely a later tradition. The sword later passed through Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, was presented to Emperor Meiji by Yamaoka Tesshu, and remains at the Tokyo National Museum today.
Cultural Impact and Reception
The drama is praised for the performances of Hiroyuki Sanada, Tetsuya Takeda, and other accomplished actors, and for tackling the Nanboku-cho period in depth — an era rarely given full treatment in the Taiga Drama series — establishing it as a defining work on the period.
Related Media
The series has been released on DVD and Blu-ray box sets by NHK Enterprises and remains a landmark video work depicting the Nanboku-cho era.
