Overview
"Musashi MUSASHI" is the 42nd NHK Taiga Drama, broadcast from January 5 to December 7, 2003. Based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel "Musashi," it starred Shinnosuke Ichikawa (now Ichikawa Danjuro XIII), with a screenplay by Toshio Kamata. Across 49 episodes, it averaged a 16.7% rating and peaked at 24.6% (Kanto region, Video Research). It is also known as the first Taiga Drama broadcast in terrestrial digital format.
Story and the Role of the Sword
The drama follows Miyamoto Musashi's musha shugyo (warrior's pilgrimage) across Japan after the Battle of Sekigahara, as he seeks to master the way of the sword and grows spiritually along the way. His confrontation with his archrival Sasaki Kojiro (played by Masahiro Matsuoka) forms the story's central climax; the Ganryu Island duel scene drew attention for its production, using radio-controlled helicopter aerial shots and a "bullet time" effect (achieved with 30 digital still cameras) that had recently gained fame in the film "The Matrix." Unlike Yoshikawa's original novel, which ends shortly after the duel, this drama continues to depict Musashi's later life with original story developments.

The drama featured a lavish cast, including Kiichi Nakai as Yagyu Munenori, Beat Takeshi as Musashi's father Shinmen Munisai, Ryoko Yonekura as Otsu, and Shinichi Tsutsumi as Honiden Matahachi.
