極》(Like a Dragon: Ishin!)
Kashū Kiyomitsu (Okita Sōji's Beloved Sword)
Uchigatana credited to Okita Sōji, first-unit commander of the Shinsengumi. Made by Kiyomitsu, a swordsmith from Kashū (Kaga Province), it was highly valued as a practical combat blade during the Bakumatsu period. Okita was renowned as a swordsman of exceptional talent, and his "three-step thrust" (sandangasuki) is transmitted as legendary swordsmanship. Featured in "Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin! Kiwami" with distinctive sword style, sparking considerable fan interest in both Okita and this blade. Extant examples are known in sword museums and private collections.
Izumi-no-kami Kanesada (Hijikata's Beloved Sword)
Beloved sword of Hijikata Toshizō, vice-commander of the Shinsengumi; the Izumi-no-kami Kanesada from Aizu is virtually synonymous with blades of the Bakumatsu period. This sword, which Hijikata reportedly carried until his final battle in Hakodate, symbolizes the end of an era. In "Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin! Kiwami," Hijikata appears as an important antagonist, and through his character's popularity, interest in this iconic blade has considerably increased.
Mutsu-no-kami Yoshiyuki (Ryōma's Sword)
Beloved long sword (uchigatana) of Sakamoto Ryōma, documented in historical record. The actual blade Ryōma possessed at the time of the Ōmiyanoya Incident was donated to the Kyoto National Museum in 1931 by Sakamoto family descendants in Hokkaido, where it is now housed. It stands as an important cultural property and a valuable example of a sword actually used by a Bakumatsu patriot. In "Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin! Kiwami," with Ryōma featured as protagonist, interest in this blade naturally deepens through the game's narrative.
Bakumatsu Master Smith Uchigatana
Minamoto Kiyomaro, Hosokawa Masayoshi, and Kurihara Nobuhide were accomplished swordsmiths who flourished during the Bakumatsu period, and their works are highly valued today as important cultural properties. The blades these craftsmen painstakingly forged during that turbulent era can be viewed in the Sword Museum (Tokyo, Ryōgoku) and art museums throughout Japan. These works serve as an ideal gateway from gaming experiences of the Bakumatsu period to appreciating authentic historical swords.
