解說
Overview
The Kyoto National Museum is holding a special feature exhibition, "Swords That Bind — Appreciating National Treasure and Important Cultural Property Swords," from 4 February to 22 March 2026 in Rooms 4 and 5 of the ground floor of the Heisei Chishinkan wing. Strongly educational in character, it presents around thirty top-tier swords — National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties — drawn from the museum's own collection and works entrusted to it.
Structure and Viewpoints
The exhibition is organised around four viewpoints fundamental to sword appreciation: "form," "signature," "temper pattern (hamon)," and "blade carving." The "form" section traces how shape differs across tachi, katana and tanto; "signature" explains how a smith's inscription on the tang reveals place and date of manufacture; "temper pattern" explores the sculptural beauty created at the boundary between the hardened edge and the body of the blade; and "blade carving" unpacks the meaning of motifs such as the kurikara dragon and Sanskrit characters engraved on the blade — all illustrated through actual National Treasure and Important Cultural Property swords.
Works on Display
Alongside National-Treasure-designated tachi and tanto, the display includes Important-Cultural-Property-designated straight blades (jokito), an early sword form predating the Nara period, and naginata, long-handled curved blades — together offering a survey of how the Japanese sword evolved from antiquity through the medieval period. Surviving straight blades are rare and hold high documentary value as evidence of the stage preceding the curved "tachi" form that became established from the Heian period onward.
Significance
The Kyoto National Museum holds one of Japan's most important sword and sword-fitting collections, and this exhibition is a recurring opportunity to present that material alongside a systematic method of appreciation. By offering newcomers concrete cues for what to look for, it opens a door into sword culture for general visitors as well as dedicated enthusiasts.
