解說
Afro Samurai
Bizen Osafune Kiyomitsu (Sengoku Practical Tachi)
Bizen Osafune Kiyomitsu is a representative practical blade mass-produced during the Sengoku period, and despite being a mass-production sword called "kazuuchi," it maintained consistent quality and was widely used in battle. It is one of the categories most fitting the image of "a practical blade of one who lives by the sword" as depicted in Afro Samurai. Many examples still exist today and have become a standard for beginning collectors of Japanese swords, with abundant stock at Tougenzai. Its simple integrity is valued precisely as a testament transmitting the way of life of Sengoku warriors.
Echizen Yasujitsugu (Early Edo Practical Master Blade)
Echizen Yasujitsugu was an official smith to the Tokugawa house who flourished in the early Edo period, a prestigious swordsmith permitted to use the hollyhock crest. Yasujitsugu's blades, which unite practicality with dignity, resonate with the worldview of Afro Samurai—"swords that should be wielded by those who have proven their strength." Highly valued as actual combat blades used by samurai, they remain a popular lineage among modern collectors.
Katayama Munetsugu (Bakumatsu Master)
Katayama Munetsugu, a master swordsmith representing late Edo, was renowned for superior cutting ability during the Shinshin-to period. The exaggerated depiction in Afro Samurai of "the myth of cutting down multiple enemies with a single stroke" finds grounding in actual Japanese sword performance—particularly the cutting ability of highly-rated practical blades like those of Munetsugu. Munetsugu's blades, which appear only rarely in stock at Tougenzai, represent one of the finest options for collectors seeking true "working blades."
Higo Dota Nunobiki (The Epitome of Cutting Swords)
The Dota Nunobiki school of Higo Province has been synonymous with "cutting swords" from the Sengoku period to the present day, consistently receiving high evaluations in test-cutting records. The extreme cutting ability depicted in Afro Samurai can be understood as an exaggeration of the performance of the highest-class practical swords like those of Dota Nunobiki. This lineage, favored by Sengoku warlords such as Kato Kiyomasa, embodies the pure "instrumental perfection" of Japanese swords and deeply resonates with Afro Samurai's worldview, which depicts sword combat directly and uncompromisingly.
Soshu Masamune (The Pinnacle of Japanese Swordcraft)
Masamune (Goro Nyudo Masamune), a master swordsmith of the late Kamakura period, is widely recognized as the greatest swordsmith in Japanese sword history, and his name has become synonymous with "the greatest blade" worldwide. Like the headband in Afro Samurai, contested as the mark of the strongest swordsman, Masamune blades have been inherited as supreme treasures among successive rulers and heroes throughout history. Masamune blades are extremely rare, with nearly all preserved in museums as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. He is the swordsmith who most purely embodies the concept of "the blade as proof of supreme strength" as depicted in Afro Samurai.
