介紹
Origins
Ōno Harufusa came from a family based at Ōno village in Hagurigun, Owari Province. His father was Ōno Sadanaga (Sado-no-kami), and his mother was Ōkura-kyō no Tsubone, wet nurse to Yodo-dono. He had an elder brother, Ōno Harunaga, and younger brothers Harutane and Harusumi. Both his birth and death dates are unrecorded. From a young age he served Toyotomi Hideyori as a close attendant, holding a stipend said to have been 1,300 koku.
Leader of the Hardline War Faction
In the 1614 Winter Campaign of the Siege of Osaka, Harufusa took a leading role in commanding the castle's defense, overseeing the Semba sector. He is known for standing opposed to the more conciliatory faction led by his elder brother Harunaga, who sought peace negotiations, instead aligning with Sanada Nobushige (Yukimura) and others as the foremost advocate of continuing the fight to the end.
The Charge on Hidetada's Headquarters, Summer Campaign
In the 1615 Summer Campaign, Harufusa commanded the left wing at the Okayama sector, deploying a force of roughly 4,600 men. He led a charge toward the headquarters of Tokugawa Hidetada, briefly throwing it into serious disorder. The disparity in forces could not be overcome, however, and the Toyotomi side ultimately collapsed.
Fate after the Fall of the Castle
What became of Harufusa after Osaka Castle fell is unclear, with several conflicting traditions: that he was captured in Kyoto and beheaded, that he burned to death within the castle, that he was killed by local peasants while fleeing along the Nara highway, or that he escaped as far as Himeji in Harima Province. Which, if any, of these is accurate remains undetermined.
Legacy
In contrast to his brother Harunaga, who sought peace, Harufusa is generally remembered as the emblematic figure of the hardline faction that fought to the very end, and is regarded as one of the central figures behind the Toyotomi side's determination to continue resistance during the Siege of Osaka.
